When you may need a QLD roadworthy certificate
You may need a QLD roadworthy certificate when:
- selling a registered vehicle in Queensland
- transferring registration to a new owner
- registering a used unregistered vehicle

A safety certificate inspection focuses on the parts of the vehicle that affect basic road safety. That can include things such as:

Common reasons a car can fail a roadworthy
Many roadworthy failures come down to everyday safety items that have been left too long. Common examples include worn tyres, brake problems, faulty lights, damaged wipers, steering issues or suspension wear.

How long a QLD roadworthy certificate lasts
In Queensland, the validity period depends on who is selling the vehicle. For most private sellers, a safety certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first. For licensed motor dealers, it is valid for 3 months or 1,000 km, whichever comes first. That is why timing matters. Booking too early can create pressure if the sale or transfer takes longer than expected. Booking too late can also cause delays. This is where a lot of drivers get mixed up. A QLD roadworthy certificate checks minimum safety standards for a registration-related purpose. A logbook service is routine maintenance based on the manufacturer schedule. They are not interchangeable. A car can pass a roadworthy and still be overdue for servicing. It can also be regularly serviced and still need a roadworthy inspection for sale or transfer.
